The Lithium Index
The open directory mapping every company in the lithium-ion battery circular economy — from mine to recycler and back again.
What is the Lithium Index?
The Lithium Index is a curated, searchable directory of companies, institutions, and people that form the lithium-ion battery value chain. Every entry is mapped to a stage on The Battery Loop — a circular taxonomy that traces materials from extraction through cell manufacturing, deployment, and ultimately recycling back into new batteries.
Unlike spreadsheets or static reports, the Index is a living, interactive tool. Search by name, filter by region or chemistry, click a sector on the wheel to drill in, or open any company's profile drawer to see its connections, verified links, and metadata — all in real time, right in your browser.
By the numbers
The Battery Loop
At the heart of the Index is a two-ring circular diagram. The outer ring represents the six stages that materials physically flow through. The inner ring represents five enabler sectors that serve every stage.
The five enabler sectors orbit the loop, supporting every stage:
How it's built
- Curated, not scraped. Every entry is reviewed by hand. We verify company websites, cross-check headquarters, and classify each entity into one or more sectors on the loop.
- Official links verified. A ✓ checkmark means the URL has been manually confirmed to resolve to the company's official domain.
- Chemistry & form factor tagged. For cell manufacturers, we tag lithium chemistries (NMC, LFP, NCA, Na-ion…) and form factors (pouch, prismatic, cylindrical, 4680…).
- Relationships mapped. Supply-chain edges (supplies, invested-in, subsidiary-of, exports-through…) connect companies into a navigable graph.
- Open data, zero dependencies. The entire directory ships as a single HTML file — no server, no API keys, no tracking. All data is embedded.
Who is it for?
Industry analysts mapping the competitive landscape. Investors scouting battery-adjacent companies and tracking supply-chain relationships. Journalists needing a quick reference for sourcing. Students and researchers studying the circular battery economy. Anyone curious about who makes the batteries that power the world.
